Plastic and wood are the most common materials that pallets are made from. There are many benefits that come with both materials however they both have their disadvantages. Today we will be explaining why plastic may be the most beneficial option for you.
Exempted From ISPM No.15
The International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures ensures that all wooden pallets are treated so that they have a thickness which is greater than 6mm when shipping products between 2 countries.
This rule is in place to prevent the spread of insects and diseases, however, this treatment does mean that it will add on an extra cost, so this will be something you’ll need to keep in mind. If your wooden pallets do not comply with these regulations they will be detained by authorities causing delays which could have been avoided otherwise.
Using plastic pallets is definitely the easiest option since they are exempt from this rule and no treatment needs to be carried out. This is due to the fact that the plastic won’t carry any wood related diseases or carry any insects.
With plastic pallets, you can easily export or import from any country without the concern of your pallets being detained.
Although plastic itself isn’t biodegradable, this material can continuously be recycled and made into new pallets again. Plastic pallets are usually moulded via the ISO 14001 standards.
Instead of chucking away a pallet after it is too broken to fix like you would have to do with wood, you can recycle the plastic pallet which is a great option for an environmentally conscious business
Plastic pallets are great for saving space. When they aren’t being used, you can stack them on top of each other but because of the way they are made they slot into each other rather than sitting on top of each other like a wooden one.
This means that during the return trip or when storing these pallets when you have no stock on them, you can save more than a third of space
Durable & Long Lifespan
Overall, plastic pallets win especially when it comes to durability and lifespan. On average, the lifespan of a wooden pallet is 3-5 years whereas plastic pallets last up to 10 years.
Plastic pallets are much less likely to break or splinter when compared to wood. This material is a much better choice to invest in for the long run.
Plastic pallets are a lot more hygienic and definitely a lot easier to clean than wooden pallets.
You can clean plastic pallets easily by spraying water on the surface using a hose, however, you can’t clean wooden pallets as easily as this. When you use water on wooden pallets they will stay wet which creates the perfect environment for fungus to grow. With plastic pallets, there is no need to worry about any pathogens or termites attacking your products.
